Updating Zoom


Zoom updates their software on a regular basis. We urge members to install the latest version prior to the start of courses to ensure you have the best online learning experience. The latest version, as of January 13, 2023 is: 5.13.4.  

The document below contains instructions to update Zoom for each of the different devices that students may be using to join a class on Zoom. The first page is an index to the correct page based on your device type.

Click on the link below for the device you are using to display detailed instructions for viewing the version of Zoom and how to update it. 
  • Windows computer without a personal Zoom account

Note that you cannot update Zoom while active in a meeting.
Throughout these instructions, reference is made to the Zoom icon, which looks like this:

Windows computer

Launch the Zoom client.  Look for the Zoom icon (blue square with white movie camera inside).
The version number appears at the bottom of the Zoom window (highlighted in yellow below).


Windows computer - Without a Zoom account

If you have an older version, and you do have a Zoom account (free or paid), sign in to your account and follow the instructions for Windows – With a personal Zoom account”. If you do not have a Zoom account, follow the steps below.

If you have not signed up for a free Zoom account, we recommend that you download the latest version from the Zoom support download center.


1. Open the download web page  https://zoom.us/download and click the blue “Download” button for “Zoom Client for Meetings.”  This will download zoominstaller.exe using your browser.

2. In your browser’s download folder (or File Explorer “downloads” folder), click to open this file.  This will automatically install the latest version of Zoom, and relaunch Zoom if it was already open. 

Windows computer - Without a Zoom account

Click on your profile image in the upper right corner of the Zoom window (red arrow below).
In the next menu, click on “Check for Updates”.
If you’re up-to-date, you’ll see a pop-up message to confirm this: 

Otherwise, you’ll see an “Update Available” message.
Click on the “Update” button to download and install the update, which takes less than a minute

Mac computer

Launch the Zoom client from the Launchpad or the dock. The icon looks like this:  
The version number appears at the bottom of the initial Zoom window (highlighted in yellow below).

To check for updates, click on “zoom.us” in the menu bar at the top of the screen, then click on “Check for Updates…”  (red arrow below).



If you’re up to date, you’ll see a pop-up message confirming this. Otherwise, you’ll see an “Update Available” window. Click on the blue “Update” button at the bottom of the window to start the update process. A Zoom Installer window will open and guide you through a few simple steps. We recommend using the default values in each step and clicking the  “Continue” button and then the “Install” button. During the process, you’ll see this prompt to enter a password; be sure to enter your macOS user password and not your Zoom password.
iPhone (iOS)

Launch the Zoom app. The icon looks like this:  
First tap the “Settings” gear symbol in the bottom the Zoom home screen. The icon looks like this: 
Then tap on “About” near the bottom of the Zoom “Settings” menu (red arrow and circle below):



iPad (iPadOS)

On the first Zoom screen (with “Sign Up” and “Sign In” at the bottom), Tap on the gear icon:   
to open the settings window.  You’ll see “Version” in the middle of the window (in yellow below).



Note: if you see the settings gear icon at the bottom left of your screen, then you’re already signed in to Zoom. You can find the version by tapping the gear, then tapping “About” near the bottom of the “Settings” window, and “Version” will appear at the top of the “About” window.
To install a new version, click on this link on your iPad to open Zoom in the App Store and click “Update” (if it appears) to install the latest version.

 Alternately, open the Apple App Store app on your device, display your installed apps and locate “Zoom”, then tap the “Update” button (if it appears) to install the latest version.
Android

Launch the Zoom app.
Click on the gear icon in the upper left corner of the home (“Start a Meeting”) screen.
Note the version number (highlighted in yellow below). 

Click on the “>” next to the version (red arrow above) to check for updates. It will then display either a pop-up “Zoom is up to date” or else indicate there is a newer version.

To install a new version, click on this link on your device to open Zoom in the Play Store and click “Update” (if it appears) to install the latest version.

Alternately, open the Google Play Store app on your device, display your installed apps and locate “Zoom”, then tap the “Update” button (if it appears) to install the latest version.
