Moderator Information

OLLI Course Moderators

OLLI at Duke offers its instructors the option of having a course moderator. We look to our membership to serve in this capacity. We encourage you to consider volunteering for this engaging and important role.

Your role as a moderator is to facilitate interaction between the students and the instructor. Each instructor will have different needs and each style of course will require different kinds of support. Typically, the moderator will monitor Zoom chat for the instructor, assist with calling on students using the Zoom raise hand feature, and, in general, be an extra set of eyes on the screen for the instructor.

The steps to become a moderator are very simple:
1. View an information video to learn more about the role.
2. If interested, submit a moderator sign-up form.
3. If assigned a course, attend the training session.
(Returning moderators are not required to attend)
Anyone wanting to be a moderator must complete and submit a Moderator sign-up form. Details and a link to the form appear under the heading "Moderator Sign-up" on this page.

Moderators do not pay a registration fee for the course they are moderating. Accordingly, moderators should not register for that course. Moderators will receive their assignment a day or two prior to when registration begins.  Note: If you register for a course, you will not be reimbursed for your registration fee even if you end up moderating for the course.
