Class Assistant Role & Responsibilities

Class Assistant Responsibilities
Class Assistants (CA) make a difference to instructors, classmates, OLLI staff and the Curriculum Committee. An important part of this volunteer position is to create a welcoming environment for each class. Being a CA is straightforward and fun.
On the first day of class:
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early
  • Introduce yourself to the OLLI Staff at the Welcome Desk.
  • Introduce yourself to the instructor and ask how you can assist them.
During each class:
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early
  • In the classroom, there will be a basket with clipboard on top of the AV cabinet.
  • Check in with the instructor and offer to help them  prepare for class.
  • Inform the instructor if there are any announcements that you need to make before class begins (they will be on the clipboard).
  • As students arrive, welcome them to class!
  • Attendance: On the first day of class, check names of students as they arrive. On subsequent days, a head count is all that is necessary.
    • If someone comes to class and isn’t on the roster, write down the name and bring it to the Welcome Desk.
  • When the class ends, gently encourage members and instructors to leave the classroom promptly.
  • Once the class is finished please put the clipboard and mic in the basket and bring it to the Welcome Desk.

Additional Information:
  • Members should wear their name badges at all times for both attendance and safety purposes.
  • Remind students to put cell phones on silent during class.
  • If the instructor experiences technical difficulties, use the Equipment/Classroom Trouble Report on the clipboard to report issues to OLLI staff. Give the report to staff at the Welcome Desk.
  • CAs are not responsible for technical assistance. If the instructor has technical issues, seek OLLI staff.
  • Code of Conduct: If you experience any issues with a member/instructor, please let the staff know. It will be kept confidential.
  • It is the CA’s responsibility to find a substitute. If you know you will be absent, please ask for a volunteer to take your place for the day.
  • Emergencies: If a member has a medical emergency, please get OLLI Staff immediately.
